King Charles I from England. That is why this breed of spaniel is named the Cavalier King Charles.

The King hired The Flemish Baroque artist Anthony van Dyck to paint The Three Eldest Children of Charles I, c. 1635. Van Dyck became the leading court painter for King Charles and eventually more popular than Rembrandt, who went bankrupt in his later years.
